Perched

Perched House is a single fronted Edwardian located in Melbourne's prestigious suburb of Fitzroy North. The client wanted to utilise the existing 1980's extension and to go up to a first floor, adding more amenity to the property. Rara had a different plan, which they proposed and was gleefully accepted by the client. The flow and unusual layout of the original Edwardian resulted in decreased optimisation of furniture due to excessive traffic space. additionally, the layout resulted in various dark areas due to poor orientation to the sun. the new layout, while seemingly small in plan optimised the lot space to the max, bringing in light and air through the property. The refurbished Edwardian, along with the new extension comprise a comfortable family home not thought achievable with the original layout.

Perched – like a Sparrow

Perched is a light extension at the rear of an inner city semi-detached Edwardian house that curver above your head.

The brief and the site are common in inner-city Melbourne propertis. Usually, because of the need to pack in as much space and storage as possible, living spaces become dark and feel cramped.

We decided to stick to the essentials by neatening up the layout to reduce dead space while playing with natural light coming in from all directions – the space is in face quite small, but no one would think so.

“We were blown away by the schematic design and floor plan when they came back – we had not envisaged what they came up with but we absolutely love it.”
